NPN Laminate of Nomex and Polyester Film

NPN is a three-layer laminate of Nomex, polyester film and Nomex.

In NPN laminates the good mechanical and electrical properties of the polyester film are ideally complemented by the excellent thermal properties of Nomex aramid paper. Standard NPN uses calendered, i.e. compacted and smoothed, Nomex.

The combination of highly heat-resistant Nomex and dimensionally stable polyester film lifts the laminate into thermal class F up to 155 C per DIN EN 60085 and makes it one of the most versatile materials in electric motor manufacturing.

NPN laminates are also available with uncalendered Nomex 411 aramid paper when higher resin uptake is desired.

Grades and thicknesses

Grades are distinguished by the thickness of the Nomex outer layers: NPN/50 with 50 µm, NPN/80 with 80 µm and NPN/130 with 130 µm Nomex. Depending on the film thickness, total thicknesses range from 0.17 to 0.63 mm. Thicker Nomex layers add thermal reserve and mechanical robustness, thinner ones save space in the slot.

Typical applications

NPN is widely used in electric motor manufacturing and is ideal for slot liners, phase separators, stamped parts and slot wedges. If class F is not sufficient, NKN laminate with a Kapton core for class H is the next step.

Delivery formats and processing

Frequently asked questions

What do NPN/50, NPN/80 and NPN/130 mean?

The number indicates the thickness of the Nomex outer layers in micrometres: 50, 80 or 130 µm. Together with the film thickness this gives total thicknesses of 0.17 to 0.63 mm.

What thermal class does NPN laminate have?

NPN belongs to thermal class F per DIN EN 60085, suitable for continuous temperatures up to 155 C. For class H, NKN laminate with a Kapton core is the alternative.

What is the difference between calendered Nomex and Nomex 411?

Calendered Nomex is compacted and smoothed, giving thinner, mechanically stronger laminates. Uncalendered Nomex 411 is more porous and absorbs more resin. NPN is available in both versions.

What is NPN used for in motor manufacturing?

Mainly for slot liners, phase separators, slot wedges and stamped parts in class F motors, wherever polyester film alone is no longer thermally sufficient.
