Phase Separators

Phase separators are stamped from flexible insulation and usually have rounded outer geometries.

At the end winding of an electric motor, the windings of the individual phases lie close together. Phase separators are inserted between the phases and insulate them reliably from one another. The rounded outer geometries prevent sharp edges from damaging the wire enamel.

After assembly the motors are usually potted or impregnated. Materials that absorb plenty of impregnating resin are therefore ideal: the resin anchors the insulation permanently in the end winding and improves heat dissipation.

For modern e-motor production lines, for example in e-mobility, we also deliver phase separators magazined, ready for automated pick-up.

Materials with high resin uptake

Proven choices are laminates with absorbent outer layers such as DMD laminate, whose fleece surface bonds very well with impregnating resins, plus NPN laminate and NKN laminate for higher thermal classes. The right material depends on thermal class, impregnation method and end winding geometry. We are happy to advise.

Manufacturing at Hauler & Hermann

We stamp phase separators on efficient eccentric presses with tools from our own tool shop, implementing new geometries within a few weeks; samples are available from a quantity of 1. For automated lines we magazine the parts in the correct orientation for direct pick-up by handling systems. Production is certified to DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001.

Key inputs are the end winding geometry, the thermal class of the insulation system, the impregnation method and whether magazined delivery is required. What does a phase separator do in an electric motor?

It insulates the individual winding phases from one another at the end winding. Without it, the phases could flash over where they touch, especially at the high voltages of modern traction motors.

Why do phase separators have rounded geometries?

Rounded contours prevent edges from damaging the sensitive wire enamel of the winding, and they are easier to insert between the winding strands.

Which materials are suitable for phase separators?
