NKN Laminate of Nomex and Kapton

NKN is a three-layer laminate of Nomex, Kapton and Nomex.

NKN laminates combine the outstanding electrical and thermal properties of Kapton polyimide film with the good mechanical properties of Nomex aramid paper. Standard NKN uses calendered Nomex.

The result is a high-performance laminate of thermal class H up to 180 C per DIN EN 60085, used where polyester film laminates reach their thermal limits.

NKN is available in total thicknesses of 0.2 to 0.4 mm, and the individual layers can be laminated in different combinations depending on application and manufacturer.

When NKN is the right choice

NKN is the material for thermally demanding drives: class H motors, generators and applications with high continuous temperatures or tight spaces where the winding runs hotter than usual. Compared with plain Nomex aramid paper, the Kapton core offers considerably higher dielectric strength at the same thickness. If class F is sufficient, NPN laminate is the more economical alternative.

Typical applications

NKN is mainly processed into slot liners, phase separators and stamped parts for class H motors and generators, for example in wind power, rail technology and demanding industrial drives.

How does NKN differ from NPN laminate?

The core: in NKN it is Kapton polyimide film, in NPN polyester film. Kapton lifts the laminate from class F to class H up to 180 C and increases dielectric strength. NPN is the more economical choice when class F is sufficient.
