Kapton Polyimide Film for Extreme Conditions

Kapton HN by DuPont is a high-performance film for extreme conditions.

Thermal class C above 180 °CUsable up to 400 °CFlame retardant

Kapton is successfully used in systems with temperatures up to 400 C and has a guaranteed continuous temperature resistance of 230 C. This puts the film in thermal class C per DIN EN 60085.

Kapton has no melting point and only begins to char above 800 C. The film is also extremely flame retardant and highly resistant to chemicals.

In short: polyimide film is used where other plastic films fail.

Applications

Application areas include chip and fuel cell stack production, medical technology, electronics and aerospace. In electrical insulation, Kapton is used wherever extreme temperatures meet minimal space, for example in special motors and thermally extreme application areas. Laminated with Nomex outer layers, Kapton is also available mechanically reinforced as NKN laminate.

Delivery formats and processing

We supply Kapton as slit rolls from a strip width of 4 mm, as sheets or processed into stamped and formed parts to drawing. Precisely with this premium film, accurate slitting pays off: on our lines we convert films from 23 µm with tight tolerances and minimal waste.

Selection criteria for purchasing and design

Kapton is considerably more expensive than polyester or aramid solutions and is worthwhile when temperature, space or chemical environment leave no alternative.
