Fringed Insulation Tapes for Radii and End Windings
Fringed tapes are insulation strips with notched edges that lie flat around radii and curved surfaces.
A flat insulation tape cannot follow a radius without buckling on the inside and stretching on the outside. Fringing solves this: the edge is notched at a regular spacing, the fringe pitch, so that the individual tabs overlap or spread when laid. The tape follows the contour, stays flat and keeps its insulating effect over the whole surface.
Fringed tapes are used wherever insulation has to cover curves: on end windings of motors and generators, on coil edges and bent conductors in transformers, as edge protection on laminated cores and as end covers on coils. In large machines they replace laborious manual cutting and give reproducible insulation.
We produce fringed tapes notched on one or both edges, with fringe depth and fringe pitch to your drawing, as rolls or as cut strips.
Fringe to drawing
The fringe geometry determines how tight a radius can be covered. A small fringe pitch and deep notches for tight radii, a large fringe pitch for wide curves. The tabs are rectangular, with fringe depth and fringe pitch set to your specification. With fringing on both edges a continuous web remains in the middle, its width set to your specification. The cutting tools are made in our own tool shop.
Materials
For thermal class H and above we process Nomex aramid paper, for transformer construction pressboard with high oil resistance, for classes B and F NPN laminate and for the highest temperatures Kapton polyimide film. On request we supply the tapes with an adhesive layer so they fix themselves during assembly.
Manufacturing at Hauler & Hermann
Fringed tapes are made on our slitting lines in a single pass: the material is slit to width and the fringe is cut at the same time. The fringe pitch stays constant over the whole roll length. We supply rolls with a defined running length or cut strips, magazined or bundled. Production is certified to DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001.

What is a fringed tape?
